"Plain and Fancy" 2 tickets at The Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, Indiana
A New Yorker and his sophisticated girlfriend drive down around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to sell a piece of property. Here they meet Amish folk, whose convoluted English speech, clothes and habits haven't changed for centuries. The clash of cultures educates and entertains at the same time in this quaint musical comedy. It was the first Broadway show for both composer Albert Hague and author Joseph Stein who each went on, respectively, to win Tony awards for Redhead and Fiddler On The Roof. The Round Barn Theatre has become the national home of this 1955 Broadway hit. This 2019 production marks the 33rd anniversary year that The Round Barn Theatre has produced Plain and Fancy making it one of the longest running shows of all time.
Transformations, like the crawling caterpiller becomes a graceful butterfly, happen before audience’s eyes in all seven main stage musicals and comedy. From “Life Could Be A Dream” to “Beauty And The Beast” the season highlights how the human spirit can evolve, improve or reconcile. “Life Could Be a Dream” follows a group of young boys who become singing stars; Papa Yoder, the patriarch of “Plain and Fancy”, in its 33rd season admits that “we grow too soon old and too late schmart”, “Freaky Friday” is brought to stage to show a mother and daughter learn to appreciate each other, Mark Twain’s Huck Finn learns along the “Big River” to love and accept all people, “Anne Of Green Gables” grows into a studious young woman and changes those around her and “The Sunshine Boys” rekindle their long broken friendship. The Holiday show, the long awaited revival of “Beauty And The Beast,” is the ultimate transformation that love can bring.
